Palaia Epidavros ancient theatre

Near the access to the Nisi peninsula lies the well-preserved ancient theatre. From the inscriptions on benches and thrones, honouring the donators, it is deduced that it was constructed in sections, starting in the middle of the 4th century BC and continuing into the Hellenistic period, although there may have been an even earlier, simpler form of the theatre.

Discovered only in 1970, first excavations began in 1972, which were continued in 1989. Meanwhile, the theatre is completely uncovered and secured so that it can be used for theatrical and musical events, although they are not quite so well known as those performed at the theatre of Epidaurus or those at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus in Athens.
